For generations, this house overlooking the Gozitan countryside has stood at the heart of one family.
Its story began with an earlier generation, when the family’s grandmother made her life here. The home later passed to her daughter, Angela, who built the house that stands today, a place shaped by family life, learning and the quiet rhythm of the village.
Angela was a much-loved teacher, and for many years, lessons were held within these walls. Generations of students came through the door to learn, and many still remember the house as part of their childhood.
Yet, before anything else, it was a family home.
The kitchen was its warm centre, filled with the familiar scents of meals being prepared and the gentle routines of everyday life. Angela’s daughter grew up here and later returned with her three young sons. Under the care of their grandparents, the house became their second home.
The character of the house was also shaped by Angela’s husband, whose days reflected the traditional rhythms of life in Gozo.
The rooftop, now a peaceful place to swim and look out across the island, was once where he kept chickens for fresh eggs and goats whose milk was used to make ġbejniet, the small cheeselets found in Gozitan kitchens for generations.
Tomatoes and figs were laid beneath the summer sun to dry slowly, preserving their sweetness for the months ahead. These were ordinary rituals, carried out with patience and care.
Much has changed since then, yet the spirit of the place remains.
When we began transforming the house into Maison 65, we wanted to preserve more than its walls and traditional details. We wanted to retain the warmth, familiarity and sense of belonging that had always lived here.
The room where young minds once gathered is now somewhere to rest. The rooftop has become a quiet retreat above the village. The care once expressed through family meals continues in the breakfast we prepare each morning.
The house has been renewed, but its soul has remained unchanged.
Maison 65 remains a family endeavour, with each of us contributing to its daily rhythm.
Some of us welcome guests, look after the house and prepare breakfast each morning. Others work quietly behind the scenes, caring for the administration and the many small details that allow everything to run smoothly.
We remain closely involved in every decision, from the way the rooms are prepared to the atmosphere we hope guests will experience.
Together, we are continuing a way of welcoming people that began long before Maison 65 had its name.
This house has welcomed students, children, neighbours and generations of family. Today, we open its doors to those wishing to experience a quieter side of Gozo.
We created Maison 65 as a place to slow down, to wake gently, linger over breakfast and return at the end of the day to the calm of the village and the open valley beyond.
We hope that, while you are here, the house feels less like somewhere you are visiting and more like somewhere you have been welcomed into.
